Why it’s called Enso coaching?

Updated: Nov 24, 2023

The Enso is a symbol from Japanese calligraphy and is made using just a single brushstroke in time with a breath that creates an unclosed or closed circle.

The symbol has many interpretations but really the true meaning is unique to each individual that paints it.

I identify strongest with the interpretation that the enso circle can be seen to symbolise harmonious cooperation between one another, acceptance of oneself, the pursuit for personal development and self-improvement. For me this captures the journey of coaching.

Many people practice creating an enso on a daily basis. I’m drawn to this small consistent practice as it mirrors my belief that it’s small things, we do regularly, that have the greatest impact on our lives overall.

I draw enso symbols when I want to become present, calm and focused and find this practice very satisfying and rejuvenating.

How to draw an Enso

- The symbol is painted/drawn usually just in one stroke

- Breath in, and as you slowly breath out draw your circle leaving it open or closed depending on how you feel, finishing at the end of the breath

- Once you’ve drawn your enso do not go back and try to alter it, just enjoy the image for how it is.
