Take a Breath - a little bit of mindfulness goes a long way

When we’re stressed, deadlines are piling up and we feel overwhelmed by our ‘to-do’ list we say, “I just don’t have enough time to fit mindfulness in, I’ll meditate when things are less hectic.” I’ve said it to myself at least twice this week! But stress makes it hard to think.


I now know it is when I’m most stressed and busy that mindfulness will have the biggest impact to help me get back on track. I also know that it’s not the time when I’m going to sit down a do a 20 min meditation! Not going to happen!


So instead, I focus on my breathing. I take just a minute or two to breathe more deeply. I close my eyes and listen to my breath. I try to make my out-breath longer than my in-breath. I count each breath to help me focus, and by the time I’ve got to 10, I can feel a little calm creeping in.

PS: I only close my eyes if it’s safe to do so, walking into a lamppost would not improve my sense of calm!
